Cover: How to find distributors in another country: a guide for B2B companies

For many industrial and technology companies, a good distributor is the fastest way to sell in another country. They know the customers, speak the language and already have the logistics in place. But a poor choice is expensive: months of waiting, a blocked market and a badly represented brand.

1. Define the distributor you need

Before you start looking, write down the profile:

  • Which customers they should serve: sector, size and area.
  • What they should do: only sell, or also install, train and provide technical service.
  • Which complementary products they should already carry, and which would compete with yours.
  • What capacity you need: sales team, technicians, warehouse.

Without this profile, any distributor seems good on the first call.

2. Where to find them

  • Trade fairs in your sector, where you will find distributors already working with brands similar to yours.
  • Industry associations and chambers of commerce in the target country.
  • Your own customers and suppliers, who often know who distributes well in other markets.
  • Competitors and complementary brands: look at who represents them.
  • Databases and professional profiles, to complete and cross-check.

3. Filter before you make contact

From a long list, keep a few candidates who match your profile. Check what they really do, which brands they carry, who they sell to and the image they project. Ten well-chosen candidates are worth more than a hundred generic emails.

4. Make the first contact

A distributor receives many proposals. Yours should explain in a few lines why your product interests them: what problem it solves for their customers, what margin and support they can expect, and why it fits with what they already sell. Look for the decision-maker, not a general inbox.

5. Evaluate before you sign

Initial interest is not enough. Before you commit, check their capacity, their references and their real commitment to your product. We explain how in how to evaluate a distributor before signing.

Common mistakes

  • Signing with the first one who shows interest.
  • Choosing the biggest, who will carry your product among many others.
  • Granting exclusivity without targets or deadlines.
  • Thinking that signing is the end: it is the beginning.
